1,2,3… [part II]: Music!

In this lovely little piece, I’d love to share with you 3 things which you have either, A) never heard of before or, B) you have heard of them but just have had no interest based off of lack of experience, exposure, etc etc etc.

Today’s piece is going to feature 3 ever-so-lovely artists/bands! These are 3 artists/bands which you’ve probably heard of but have more than likely gone: “Yeah, that sounds cool… I’m sure I’ll get to it at some point” and just never have. Well today is that point! Let’s begin, shall we?

1) Sigur Ros:

First on my list is an Icelandic band called Sigur Ros! Anyone who knows me knows that I am in love with this band (so yeah, I’m a little biased here) and I have their entire discography on my iTunes. Have you ever wanted to study or sleep to music? I do this all the time and this is the band that I do that with! What makes them so special you might ask? Well, I’m sure many people have encountered the problem of studying with music when listening to mainstream, Western-English bands… the reason for this? You can understand the lyrics! The minute you can understand the lyrics, you begin to get lost in them, distracted, day-dreaming, singing-along, etc etc etc. But with Sigur Ros, they don’t sing in English and you can easily get lost in the beautiful foreign vocals and stunning instrumentation without losing focus! Many of their songs are 5-10 minutes or longer and they often feature a steady build into a very powerful and heart-wrenching climax (that is not what she said, don’t ruin this moment!).

Other Notable Songs: Vaka (also called Untitled), Svefn-G-Englar, Glosoli.

2) Birdy:

I just recently discovered Birdy and let me say, I could not be happier! This youngster has such a talented voice, I am floored by every single song that she sings. Her discography is nowhere near the size of Sigur Ros’, as she appears to be fairly new onto the music scene; she has mostly done covers, but that’s okay with me. One notable mention is that Birdy does a fantastic cover of Phoenix’s 1901 and I love it just as much as the original! Give this gal a listen, especially if you do like falling asleep to songs with lyrics you can understand. Her mellow vibe and angelic voice, combined with indie-pop songs which are generally sung by hard-hitting male vocalists, puts a big smile on my face every time. (Insert corny joke here:) Keep soaring Birdy!

Other Notable Songs: 1901 (Phoenix cover), Skinny Love (Bon Iver cover), Shelter (Francis and the Lights cover).

3) The Rocket Summer:

This one-man band has been a long-time favourite of mine as it combines the indie-pop style that I love with high-energy vocals and original lyrics. Yet another band whose entire discography graces my iTunes and I hope to add more of The Rocket Summer’s music someday. This is definitely the type of music you listen to when you want to have a feel good day (or maybe a 10 minute cry, depending on the song) and you want to listen to something with a rock edge, as opposed to Top 40/Dance music.

Other Notable Songs: You Gotta Believe, So Much Love, Walls.

Hopefully you can find the time to give one (or all) of these songs a listen. I give you my personal guarantee that they are all 100% fan-tas-tique or your money back! I’m a firm believe that music soothes the soul and it is a great extension of emotion. Music possesses the ability to make you happy, sad, angry, etc etc etc; the possibilities are really quite endless.

Much Lovin’,
The Chad.
