So today, I’m all upbeat and cheery :) Maybe it’s the endorphins from the gym or all of that lovely Vitamin-D from the sun! So naturally, I want to make you feel all upbeat and cheery too; particularly if you’re feeling down-in-the-dumps… and if you’ve had such a splendid day that you couldn’t possibly get any happier, then go stub your toe on something and we will wait for you to get back.
Ok, so I can’t have a lovely philosophically-pleasing topic for you everyday. But in all honesty, who cares with a video like this! Now I imagine that a lot of you have already seen this… I think it was posted back in early 2010. But can we just stop for one second and acknowledge how fantastic this video is? I believe that this was the first major video to spark an entire wave of University/College lipdub ideas and… well, no offence to all of those other universities and colleges, but your videos were all preeettttyyy, how the French say: terrible (TAIR-E-BLUH!).
Of all the libdub videos that I have seen, Calvin College’s is the only video that actually keeps the camera on the faces of the participants the entire time and whenever lines/words are sung, those said participants are legit “lipdubbing”! And for those of you who don’t know, lipdubbing is the act of replacing one person’s voice with another. It’s pretty simple stuff… often times foreign films/cartoons will get this treatment to make them more “user friendly”.
So my lovely ladies and gents, perhaps I can make a philosophy out of this for you after-all. It goes along the lines of: If you aren’t going to do it properly, then don’t do it at all! This is not to say that you should never try and fail. To the contrary, I am all for trying and accepting the consequences, whether they be good or bad. But at least put a little bit of research into what it is that you are doing and try to make it seem like you didn’t throw it together in 2 minutes!
It’s like when you write a paper the night of (and yes, I am very guilty of writing papers the night of… in fact, I have one due Thursday that I will start tomorrow); your Professor knows you wrote it the night before. They always know. Well, almost always. Yes, sometimes you can get away with writing a paper while still drunk from the night before but there is a profound difference between this subject and that! No offence to our Profs, but the people-of-the-interwebs are way more harsh and way more judgemental! We like to see quality material, even if we don’t always expect it from ourselves.
So long story short. Be prepared like the lovely folks of Calvin. They knew what they were doing and as a result, they are reaping the rewards of an amazing video which will eternally circulate the internets forever!
P.S. In case you were wondering, the song in this video is So Much Love by The Rocket Summer (The Rocket Summer is also one of my favourite bands, so I was a little bit biased with this video as well!)
